Virginia State Fair with Competitive Events

Each year you'll find Richmond, Virginia hosting its annual state fair from the end of September to the beginning of October. The backbone of the state fair tradition is the showing of local domesticated farm animals, both to educate the public and hopefully drum up business.

At this fair the agricultural exhibits are no different. Open Beef Cattle, Youth Beef Cattle, Cashmere Goats, Sheep, Rabbits, you name the farm animal and there's an exhibit for it at the state fair.

Just as animals will be pigging out to look good for the fair, you'll be pigging out while at the fair. There are lots of concessions to choose from with a variety of foods. Look for Old fashioned Phosphates and Ice Cream Soda, Roast Corn on the Cob, French Fries, Hot Dogs, Enchiladas, Chocolate Covered Bananas, and Quarter Pound Crab Cakes. You'll find when you visit the fair that there's just too much food to mention it all.

Another popular form of entertainment at the fair is the Hog Race. The Virginia State Fair hosts Rosaire's Royal Racing Pigs, "Hogs on the Run" is the name of the game. This show includes some audience participation and daily prizes.

People racing at the fair comes in the form of Lawn Mower Racing, Cowgirl Barrel Racing, and I suppose the Demolition Derby counts here too. The Lawn Mower Races are held in the Grandstand Arena and feature 4 classes of high performance lawn mowers that can reach speeds of 65 mph. Cowgirl Barrel Racing at the fair is part of the IPRA Rodeo held over the course of two days in the Equestrian Center. The Demolition Derby is fun to watch in the Grandstand Arena, just don't sit too close to where the cars are smashing into each other.

Each year the activities and entertainment at the fair varies, but you can always find the same basic brand of fun.
