A History of Lisburn

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Lisburn, although perceived to be a young city, is actually a place which holds an important place in Irish history. The year of 1600 is where Lisburn's history is said to have begun and back then it was originally a small settlement and was known by the name of Lisnagarvey, which was looked over by the Chief of Killultagh. It is important to know that during this year Ireland's Chieftains were in arms against English rule in their country and this led to battles which eventually seen the English victorious and take control over a majority of towns, villages and land.

Lisnagarvey was indeed one of these villages and in 1609 was given over to a Sir Fulke Conway. Conway was very keen to gather in the English and Welsh tenants and it wasn't long until Lisnagarvey became loyal to King Charles completely. Over the next few years the town thrived and bustled with markets, businesses and trades and little occurred other than the Conway Castle being built in 1627. It wasn't until the year of 1641 during Ireland's great Rebellion that Lisnagarvey, because of its loyalty to the English crown, seen rebels trying to seize it. This led to the rebels being out numbered and eventually they resorted to setting the town alight causing Lisnagarvey to burn to the ground. It is thought that after the fire, the town gained its name Lisburn.

It took a while for Lisburn to be rebuilt to the way it was and by 1670 it was beginning its legacy in the linen industry. Louis Crommelin brought a group of nearly 100 Huguenot weavers to the small town in 1698 and built the first factory. With his European connections Crommelin made sure that Lisburn's Linen industry would do well until disaster hit the town in 1707 when a large fire once again diminished the town to ashes. Once again the town was rebuilt and by 1800 it was boasting industrial strength and popularity with Damask material through Europe and even enticed important members of royalty to visit the Coulson Factory. Although Lisburn had a large industrial impact on the surrounding area, the town itself was filled with stores, public houses, shoemakers, markets etc. Locals enjoyed shopping in Bow Street and Bridge Street, the former being a popular shopping destination today. Lisburn's location has always played a large part in its industrial and economical benefits, as it is central to the main routes to Belfast in the North and Dublin in the South of Ireland. In the 1800s the Lagan Canal was built and with this access to Belfast from Lisburn was made much easier and had a huge economical and commercial impact on the small town.

Today Lisburn is one of the most popular places to visit in Northern Ireland as it has a great history which involves famous figures, important historical milestones, not to mention its long and prosperous linen industry. It is often overlooked when it comes to the larger surrounding cities such as Belfast and Derry but it has just as much of an important story to tell.

Jonny Glover runs Lisburn Pages a local online business directory, targetted at businesses in Lisburn Northern Ireland. You'll find a comprehensive directory listing everything from Lisburn Hotels to Guesthouses.

Things to Look Out For in Salisbury and Wiltshire

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Living in Salisbury I find I am extremely lucky that I have so many amazing walks and historic sites to look at whether its Stonehenge, the amazing bridal ways that crisscross huge areas of Wiltshire's beautiful countryside, or the amazing Sarum castle which hosts jousting and re-enactments at different times of the year.

Salisbury is also host to the Salisbury International Arts Festival at the end of May through to the start of June which always has some amazing performances and great activities lined up for anyone wanting to take part. If you are able to travel however and can't wait till then I know there is the Budapest Spring Festival coming up at the end of March first week in April that would be well worth a look with an equally dramatic historical city.

Wiltshire is renowned for its walks and cycling routes with some amazing scenery to travel through. One of the roman droves takes you all the way down to Cornwall which enables anyone on a budget to get on their bike and ride. As we steadily move towards spring time the number of beautiful hot air balloons flying through the sky increases, with most offering the chance of people booking for a ride.

There are lots of picturesque villages around Wiltshire with village community life taking a hand in how the areas develop, this makes sure that there is always something going on in the area. Its worth checking local newspapers to find out what's on in Wiltshire, or going online and checking one of the many community information websites online.

The historical side of Salisbury and the surrounding area has been further enhanced by the efforts of the brilliant archaeological team that is based on the outskirts of Salisbury. With one of its members on the team of the renowned "Time Team" from channel 4, they are gradually stripping back the layers hiding what has been before us. Many of their finds can be seen in the Salisbury Museum which has a fantastic collection of historical artefacts.

You can find information about the area by going into the Salisbury visitor information centre and speaking to the people there, they will help inform you of things that are happening at the time or point you in the right direction if you want to see specific things in the area. As I said in the beginning of this article I feel very lucky to be in Wiltshire and only advise that you find out what is available before you come so that you can allow yourself enough time.

The Budapest Spring Festival is coming up, its also well worth finding out whats on in Wiltshire to see when the Salisbury International Arts Festival is on.

Bubbleator Seattle 2044

Image : http://www.flickr.com

"We are like animalculae in a drop of water . . ." Fredric Brown

AN UNDERGROUND TRANSIT System operated for twenty-four years through President, Calaveras, and Snohomish Counties without suffering a solitary mishap. The Regional Transit Authority's "Vision 2020" had been well realized. Sat 4 JUL, 2044, President County's Chief Exec Cho-M'Bobea lasercut the SoulGold(k) across Pioneer Square Main Station's . . . and Sealth's . . . newest public toy.

The former King County had been renamed after President Rice, first USA black president, died during the Virus Riots of 2017.

Literally thousands of "shoeboxes" dotted the landscape of "Pretzel" County, 1342 in the City of Sealth alone. The eighty Underground Access Elevators of Pioneer Square propelled twenty thousand people an hour through SEAPAC's three levels of transit, linking the rail systems, van transit, the flyways and the new underwater marine channels to cities all over Western Washington and downcoast into Oregon, California(k), and well into Mexico.

CE M'Bobea, a naturalized human Pan-African, spraypainted her name with harmless vegetable dyes outside Main Station's shoebox, or UAE, on the ever-changing Rainbow Motion Board. ComPugenta(k) cool air, sights, sounds, smells and textures emanated from the board, overpowering a crowd of metallically dressed men, women, kids and natuchildren(k) gathered to watch as members of SEAPAC's Planning Committee prepared to ride the giant "Levitator."

"You wouldn't believe our track improvements," murmured Zien Pea, a grown natuchild of ten and comember of 2044's SPC, to a Globavid reporter from East Kenya, then a white-held territory.

The reporter, David Hopdotter, an Anti-Sectionist Jew, was a known crusader on behalf of brown nationalist groups, and a Western Bloc government-paid news agent. He was nearly keeling over himself from Compugenta's Virtual Reality show, while most of the crowd could barely converse, even in TAP.

"Isn't work boring you?" David mouthed back. He hated TAP.

But Zien, eyes large and blue-green, TAPPED slowly, in a way sure to enforce her ideas SOUNDLY into David's mind, that she LOVED the shiny clothes generated for comembers by Seabell/the Coastal Transit Project. "I HATE autoleather. It's SQUISHY, growing viraclothes in labs. They mined TONS of Snohomish County gold building the tracks!" She pulled his sleeve, signaling "NO WAY." Always TAPPING the latest permafrozen slang, Zien.

You TAP using the other person's whole body. That lets in the Deaf-Blind. Zien could see and hear, some, but used a Chair.

The entire crowd surged forward when the huge Main Elevator doors opened, letting everyone into the biggest shoebox in town. Zien and fifty other Chairpeds backed in. Padded grabbars merged as the thirty-foot wide doors whispered shut on the hunplus-foot deep shoebox. A natuvoice came on, explicating the UAEs.

"Built to accommodate Sealth's six-and-a-half million people, not to mention the two million traveling through, the shoeboxes also help generate energy, pumping out excess water from First Level. A circulating hydraulic system drives the new, totally safe, pollution-free Levitator . . ."

The leviathan elevator swooped around in loopdyloop passages. "We're going through the pretzel now," David gently TAPPED on Zien's right shoulder, "if my stomach survives all the twisting."

Sure enough, the UAE inserted into the Water Table, the very first Underground restaurant in Sealth, just waylay enough to switch corridors while inundating all 328 passengers with gentle virtual reality tastes and aromas, one meal with drink at a time on "hunger display." Only Tokyo's cafes surpassed its quality.

The giant elevator then merrily zoomed along sideways, its foot-thick Plass front allowing full display of THOUSANDS of tiny restaurants/drug bar fronts, markets and businesses, the six-mile Mall River Forest Park, the PoliBuilding, and Sealth Aquarium's Salmon (Coho, Chum and Steelhead) Causeway on Mezzanine Level.

David loved the salmon causeway, mouthing and TAPPING at Zien constantly about fishing privileges and waiting lists. "Next month, honey, when I drop in from Qakar (Kenya's new Pan-African name) I'm gonna take you fishing, up-up-up, I promise!"

Zien didn't care. David's third daughter, via fertilization of two women and much frantic labwork to fuse her halved body parts-David had been overtested for IDC (k) (Immune Deficiency Condition) during the Virus Riots of 2025-had a mission. Her singleminded purpose was to promote awareness of genetically altered people as legitimate human beings, in spite of their strange looks, multiple disabilities, and scary potentialities.

Other than that, she ECSTATICALLY loved organic beancream!

But she was more worried than excited about her entry into Underground Sealth's "Hell Realm," her Chinese aspect appalled by the special closing in around her, the lack of a beautiful blue sky overhead. She knew no color but loved blue. She was able to sense its vibratory pattern the best of all. She leaned against her IDC-treated father, a man who'd grown up in hospitals, screaming his lungs out to leave.

Care providers of the 21rst Century were a grand delusion of medical skills and elemental soul-casting, taking life quickly with huge doses of poison when it became unpalatable, steadily experimenting with people's bodies. "They force us to be made sick and well," according to megacare reformer Flo Ware X-806 .

Very few comembers were worried about this, Zien found, as she TAPPED on them; SPC Shirley Fung believed care an attempt "to help, not harm." Bored with phrases, Zien wanted full citizen's rights. She was already mayor of her Aboveground urban village.

Zien's village led SeaTac region's disposal of wastes into utilizable natural and methane gas pockets. Meanwhile plants, Earth's chief oxygen source, had cornered AMCA's inarable land. Disabilities, racial/sexual issues and animal rights remained as distantly soluble problems for AMCANS after the World Bank released Engas, the special bonds freezing funds of all countries in Interchange, the major global work of the tens, twenties and thirties. But money as a concept was finally destroyed by computer exchange systems. They couldn't keep track of theft!

Only human, natu, and animal efforts, computer signals and group co-op signatures were needed to start projects anymore. That meant a multilevel Washington connected by rail to upper Canada, the southmost Baja tip, and all points east by 2039.

Rail would have been global if not for planecars. Licensed drivers still flood the buzzing skies over most urban centers. They wiz around each other at lightening speeds.

Ten minutes after taking forty-three planned angle turns, the west coast's tenth largest UAE phwoomphed to a gentle, caressing stop at the Third Level's biggest platform, Denny RetroParque.

Right under the Upper Queen Anne Transit Island, the parquet was delineated by universal animal and plant symbology, as well as local Sealth landmark symbology. Aboveground, Metro TransVans provided all short trips within President and Calaveras Counties.

Ever one disembarked, some onto the moving platform, others onto the tree-lined walk/bikeway below. Zien chose the walkway, subfluorescence pulsing robin's egg blue from the rounded walls. Third Level's ceiling was an incredible 550-feet high, solar subfluorescence pulsing robin's egg blue from the rounded walls. Light-emiting diodes wrapped each comember in a unique, 500-tone rainbow that caressed one's body with orgasmically liquid warmth.

Much is being done at present to help prenatu eyes that reflex poorly against indoor light, disabling children from normal sight. Nowadays natus have all the worst vision problems as keratotomic surgery, widespread since the late '10s, has corrected all human vision problems. Some AMCA laws bar natus from the upper levels of the AMCA Armed Services, government and the private sector.

The Jewish father and daughter team deboarded with a knot of twenty comembers, shimmering to the tune of rainbow lights and foggy background attracter music wheezing from sardine-packed restaurants/drug bars, and arrived at the commemoratively named Belated Health Bar. The recessed front of the eight-foot wide, sixty-foot deep, hunplus-level, hydraulic transfloor Bar (stand on the Chairped-access leftpad hologrammed Sealth's famed ruddy terrace-cotta. There David bought them one of the only family of drugs proven to benefit the human central nervous system by encouraging regrowth of damaged myelin tissue. They sipped twin cool sprinkice freshments with whipped cranboysenberry syrup, and felt the soothing effects of...PPOOOPPPPPPPP ! ! !

Both of them looked up as all light around Third Level boomed off. The last thing David saw was the glimmer of a pretty remate human's . . . or was she natu? Silvamesh, pinfeather-lined dress.

A human-sounding voice vibrated their table as Zien clung to David, TAPPING frantically; the voice echoed like the usual David, TAPPING frantically; the voice echoed like the usual public address PoliSystem Regional Transit operative. But David sensed something amiss. Transit usually hired natus as Vocals.

"Do NOT panic. Your transit system and Underground parquet are SAFE while service repairs are made. You will experience TEMP darkness . . ." Troping the story to Globavid as he carefully listened, David also touched his cellwave phone, capable of wave rescending through fifty thousand miles of concrete, and called Field Supervisor Terno Farquar-el-Grey. A Pan-Arab infused with Korean body parts, Farquar was an old friend of David's from the Virus Riots. "Far" accidentally took a viral explosion that saved David's life by swerving his Boeing Eagle convertible, a flying car, into an oncoming blast of fuel, aimed at David, a war analyst for the Redmond Massacre.

"FARQUAR! My daughter is up a tree! She's practically climbing into my outer pockets. Why's it taking forever on this?"

"Tell your daughter to calm down, and press the receiver of your ear. Stat? Good. Third Level is being held by pro-Kenyan terrorists." David stoked the word "safe" into Zien's silver hair. Zien never believed anything but her own Formachair's computer-laden Envir(k) was safe. But she kinda liked danger. Her chair did not have normal legs. It was not a Spider Chair. It hovered over the grown on a cushion of air, and the legs were receded into the frame.

"Oh, Garamond Adonai, yer HOLLOW!" David laughed.

"Nopers. We have about an hour to track down a team of White Party Nairobeans before they blow up Third Level with a SUBGUM of a thermo-nuclear explosion, imploding SEALTH. Y'COPY???"

'NAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH." Zien could tell something was wrong. Everyone else was pulling out pocket lights and marijuana (filtered) lightups, creating a flickering candlelit glow. She finally grabbed David's pocket lighter and beamed his face.

"If you don't tell," she TAPPED, all over his body, turning on her background noise inhibitor so she could hear him, "I'LL TICKLE YOU ! ! !" That was Zien's most dreaded trick.

Farquar steadily intoned David's doom into one red-veined ear, giving him details the Metro PoliSafety Teams had uncovered through multicam TV detection systems. They'd spotted two alien men clothed head-to-toe in light-absorbing black Starcloth(k) when one of them idiotically lit an unfiltered hash joint.

"We turned on all the sprinkler systems to dampen their clothes so we can ranar 'em better. The Purple Team saw them in Zone 14. Definitely the body shapes of human pro-phobics.

"Phobics" were what media called "white" people scared of racially merging with brown people. Worldwide. There were plenty of these, holding assets of resources in centers of power, since the Virus Riots; and the Darwin-based pleas for supremacy from the former rich wielders of money and securities. David, a former phobic, hated it passionately since natu Zien was born.

Zien's mothers were the only match possible out of available candidates for BirthQuest(k) from David's tired, medic-tampered body. By the time he pushed to have kids he had to face that. Two Szechwan women selflessly tolerant of his Life Profile were needed to combine every sustainable, undamaged chromosome.

"The City is the place where the diffused rays of many separate Beans of Life fall into focus . . ." said a Chinese proverb in 1994 on the wall of a Metro office. "Far, how in HELL does a Jew and a disabled natu enter Zone 14, alone and unaided, when we're all the way . . . Zien, gimme light . . . IN ZONE 36 UQATI?"

"You don't, we do. We're in Zones 12 to 16, searching, and we've got 'em surrounded. There go the batteries," Farquar sighed as hundreds of backup superconductors flooded on. "They have a combined life of about a million years. Since the world lost money as a concept we can use either system anymore. But I lost money as a concept we can use either system anymore. But I guess we'll pull easy handle on Third Level's generator soon . . .

"Yup. McCaulough says they submicrowaved terminals in the fused Permaplates(k). One of the Green Team must be THEM. Oops. There's only . . . all twelve of them just surrendered . . . their liason says Nairobi used to be allies with my old country!

"We have the thermo-nuclear BOMBO ! ! !" Enda problema.

Farquar's words, reassimilating in David's recording cells, pared down to an essential story. David troped film/voice to Globavid pretty much like sneezing. Smiling at his relieved daughter and their refreshing drugs, he touched the phone off.

MANY THANKS TO JOE AND YOSH AT METRO, PHYLLIS MILLER AND OTHERS AT SEATTLE'S CITY PLANNING DEPT, FOR THIS STORY'S BACKGROUND AND THE CLEARANCE TO HAVE IT PUBLISHED BY ME!

Travel Guide - Chicago

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Chicago is one of the great cities of the world and one of my favourite destinations for long weekend getaways. Here you will find some useful information about this city that will enable you to plan your own escape to Chicago.

History

In 1673 French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet passed through what is now Chicago. Chicago's first European settler was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a fur trader from Santo Domingo of French-African descent. He built the first settlement in 1779 at the mouth of the Chicago River. The construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal provided a connection between Chicago and the Mississippi and fueled population growth in the area in the 1830s. In 1837 Chicago was incorporated and had a population of 4,170. The city became a transportation hub in 1848 when the Illinois and Michigan Canal was completed and the first locomotive arrived. Chicago was also known for its stockyards which served the nation between 1865 and 1971.

On October 8, 1871 the Great Chicago Fire (supposedly started when a cow kicked over a lantern) started and claimed 300 lives, left 90,000 residents homeless and essentially destroyed the entire city. This turned into one of the greatest opportunities for rebuilding and within just a few years the entire city was reconstructed.

During the second half of the 19th century, the city's growing industrial worker population campaigned for better working conditions, better wages and an eight-hour work day. There were several clashes between workers and the police, the most well known was the Haymarket Square Riot of 1886.

In 1893 Chicago hosted the World's Columbian Exposition that attracted nearly 26 million visitor during its six-month run. In order to provide transportation to the fair, the Chicago Transit Authority introduced the first elevated trains to Chicago. Today the system's "L" train encircles the city's central business area, referred to as the "Loop". Chicago's cultural interests can be traced to this era, when its orchestra, library and major museums were established. In 1909 Daniel Burnham's comprehensive city plan was published which provided an unobstructed lakefront, a citywide system of parks and a green belt of forest preserves.

Alternate periods of corruption and reform characterized the city's political history in the early 20th century. In the summer of 1919 race riots erupted throughout the United States, the worst occurring in Chicago on July 27. The riots shocked the nation and prompted many to launch efforts toward racial equality through volunteer organizations and reform legislation. The prohibition era during the 1920s saw a lot of gang activity. Al Capone was the most well-known of gangsters. His illegal activities culminated in the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929, a violent shootout to eliminate his competitors. He was convicted of income tax evasion in 1931, sentenced to 11 years in prison and was released on parole in 1939. Crippled by syphillis he spent the rest of his life in a mansion in Miami Beach, Florida.

In 1933 Chicago hosted the the World Fair, dubbed "A Century of Progress", to show the technological accomplishments of civilization since the city was incorporated. The fair attracted 39 million visitors in a two-year period.

Richard J. Daley was elected Mayor of Chicago for the first of six times in 1955. For 21 years, Daley served "the city that works'. During his time in office, O'Hare International Airport (which became the world's busiest) began operations, the Sears Tower (one of the world's tallest buildings) was erected and McCormick Place Convention Center (the largest in North America) opened.

In 1976, Mayor Daley died in office. Since then, Chicago elected its first female mayor (Jane Byrne in 1979) and its first African American mayor (Harold Washington in 1983). In 1989, Mayor Richard M. Daley, son of Richard J. Daley, was elected mayor and still holds the position.

The city of Chicago has increased its exposure as a world-class city by hosting the World Cup Soccer Tournament in 1994, the Democratic National Convention in 1996, the International Pow Wow in 1998 and an International Millennium Celebration in 1999/2000.

Neighbourhoods

Chicago's multicultural heritage is reflected in its neighbourhoods, which now attract thousands of visitors each year. It is home to nearly three million people from all over the world. People of African, Chinese, German, Greek, Vietnamese, Italian and Scandinavian descent are among those who have made Chicago their home. After Warsaw, Chicago has the second largest population of Polish people in the world.

Architecture

Chicago is the birthplace of modern architecture. From historic landmark buildings to contemporary masterpieces, Chicago is home to unique and innovative designs that have shaped American architecture. Chicago is a living museum of architecture, thanks to geniuses such as Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Helmut Jahn, Frank Gehry and many others.

Museums

Chicago is world-renowned for its diverse collection of museums, which explore a variety of subjects, including Chicago history, art, African American culture, astronomy, natural history and more. The Museum Campus, located in Grant Park, features the John G. Schedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum of Natural History. Other famous Chicago museums include the Chicago Historical Society, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the DuSable Museum of African-American History. Various ethnic groups, including the Mexican, Polish, Lithuanian, Swedish, Greek, Ukrainian and Jewish population, have their own museums, showcasing their history, art and costumes. The Museum of Contemporary Photography and the Museum of Holography will appeal to individuals with an interest in visual arts.

Tours

Chicago can be explored by foot, bus, bike, boat or plane and its famous landmarks can be discovered on land, river, lake or in the sky. The Chicago Architecture Foundation offers guided walking and river tours to explore the city's unique architecture.

Taste

Chicago has thousands of restaurants serving a variety of culinary delights to suit every taste, every budget and every mood. Taste of Chicago is an annual festival featuring house specialties from dozens of the city's restaurants. It is held during the last week of June and first week of July and attracts hundreds of thousands of culinary fans.

Shopping

Shopping in Chicago began on State Street, the center of the Loop. The original and flagship Marshall Field's department store opened in 1852 on State Street. The famed "Magnificent Mile" that runs along Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Oak Street offers hundreds of specialty shops and boutiques presenting top-of-the-line goods from around the world. Oak Street features designs from Paris, Milan and Manhattan.

Family Entertainment

Navy Pier offers more than 50 acres of shops, restaurants, gardens and entertainment attractions. It holds a 15-story Ferris wheel, an IMAX theatre as well as the Chicago Children's Museum. Kids on the Fly is a "satellite" Chicago Children's Museum located at O'Hare International Airport that entertains and educates children during layovers or waiting times at the airport. The Children's Zoo at the free admission Lincoln Park Zoo includes live animal presentations, a petting zoom, a zoo nursery and a hands-on learning center for kids.

Music

Chicago is one of the hot beds for jazz and blues. Jazz began to spread from the South between 1910 and 1920 and Chicago became the nation's jazz center in the 1920s. "Chicago style" jazz also originated in the 1920s and during the 1930s, Benny Goodman, a one time child prodigy from a poor Chicago family, was established as the "King of Swing". In the 1930s and 1940s blues eventually came north to Chicago and has remained a popular music genre ever since. Today the city features many jazz and blues venues and hosts a variety of music festivals throughout the year, including the the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival, the Chicago Gospel Festival, the Chicago Country Music Festival, the "Viva Chicago" Latin Music Festival and the World Music Festival.

Chicago features 7300 acres of parkland, including 552 parks, 33 beaches, nine museums, two world-class conservatories, 16 historic lagoons, 10 bird and wildlife gardens. Historic Grant Park and newly created Millennium Park are among the most well-known of Chicago's green spaces. Chicago also features 6 golf courses, 9 lakefront harbours, and a multitude of tennis courts for outdoor recreation. The waterfront trail along Lake Michigan's shoreline is a mecca for joggers, bikers and in-line skaters.

Chicago is a big sports town and home to several professional sports teams, including the Chicago Bulls (basketball), the Chicago Bears (football), the Chicago Cubs (baseball), the Chicago White Sox (baseball), the Chicago Blackhawks (hockey) and the Chicago Wolves (semi-pro hockey). It holds historic sports venues such as Wrigley Field, Comisky Park - now known as US. Cellular Field, and Soldier Field.

Expert Partners For Shipping to Russia From the USA

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Russia is one of the world's largest port, rail, and air shipping destinations. The country is a vast consumer and producer of an endless assortment of goods that support both the frigid climes of the far north and the more temperate zones of the southern lowlands. Shipping to Russia from the USA must therefore be equally adaptable to the variations of the land and the goods flowing into and out of the country.

To get the adaptability and expertise you need for effective shipping to Russia from the USA, you want a shipping partner who has experience with the countries' regulations as well as offices in both the United States and Russia. Ideally, those offices should be in major ports, such as St. Petersburg and Miami, as well as centers of government, such as Moscow. This will ensure that any administrative hurdles can be cleared in short order.

An established presence is also an advantage over a newcomer. This is especially true when working in shipping to Russia from the USA, as separations of language, culture, and history can cause misunderstandings. As both sides seek to protect their international ports of entry from infiltration from unlicensed traders and unsafe cargo, those who have already established a strong business network will be at a competitive advantage. This will help with customs officials and help ensure that there are no unseemly delays once goods have arrived at their destinations for loading and unloading.

Russia's extreme temperature variations and vast distances create the need to coordinate second stage shipping in addition to basic in and out services. Getting goods from the interior to the far ports or from the ports to the interior requires a knowledge of the rail networks. No expert service shipping to Russia from the USA would be complete without the capability to handle this element of the service. You will want to do your due diligence to ensure that your selected shipping firm can handle door to door service, regardless of where in Russia the goods are bound.

Russia is one of the world's largest shipping destinations and transit hubs, and they continue to be a major partner of the United States. Shipping to Russia from the USA therefore requires a shipping partner with the versatility to handle the quirks of dealing with the Russian shipping industry and the vastness of the Russian trading network. Don't take chances!

LimcoLogistics.com has been providing transcontinental overseas shipping services for nearly a decade. We have experienced agents stationed throughout the world. We can ship your cargo anywhere in the world including shipping cars to Europe, ship cars to Russia and moving cargo overseas.

Lindsay Lohan's Numerology; Can She be a Leading Lady?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Having just turned 20, Lindsay Lohan still passes for a teenager in Hollywood, but the writing's on the wall; she will need to transition into adult roles to go forward with her career. With some problems with her director in 'Georgia Rule', and her frequent trips to the hospital; there are questions about Lindsay Lohan's professionalism. Can she be counted on to carry a picture as a Leading Lady in today's Hollywood?

As a Numerologist, if I want to use divination and see what is in someone's future there are (3) main calculations which I look at: their Life Cycles, their Letters of Transit and their Personal Year. These values give me clues about what's in store for a person in the next few years.

Her Life Cycle

Lindsay Lohan is still in her first life cycle, which won't end until her 30th birthday in 2016. There is a great deal of soul-searching and self-analysis during these years. Potentially, she may achieve a great deal of personal growth in this time. Lindsay has a tendency to create problems for herself by rejecting the advice of others. This shows up as her difficulties with her fellow actors and authority figures.

The challenge of this cycle is to overcome fears of new task and environments; taking professional risk in her life. There also is a certain amount of reluctance to communicate with others. Her recording career shows that she is handling this challenge well.

Her Transit Letters

Her transit letters of 'G' and 'N' have been in affect for a while, and will continue through the next two years. The letter 'G' marks a time when solitude is called for. She will tend to be secretive about her affairs. Overall, this is a good time for her financially. The letter 'N' marks an exciting time in her life. Lohan will experience many changes and task which call on her ability to adapt. This letter calls for pleasant times, and some ups and downs in her finances.

Her transit letter of 'D' has been in affect since 2003, and will end next year in July 2007. This letter calls for hard work, and presents chances to take charge of her life. It also causes Lindsay to be run down easily and experience health problems. This will continue until she turns 21 in July 2007; her exhaustion problems aren't going away just yet.

Next year, her transit letter of 'D' will be replaced by an 'S'. This will mark a year of surprises and changes in Lindsay's life. It will be an active and ambitious year for her; a real emotional high. It should also mark the end of her health and exhaustion problems.

This should mark the beginning of a two year period of dramatic changes for Lindsay. Her one year transit letter of 'S' will be followed by another one year transit letter of 'A'. She will see some exciting changes in both her career and her personal life once she turns 21 in July 2007.

Her Personal Year

2006 is a personal year (8) for Lindsay Lohan; a time when she may gain success and material wealth; but, only if she has worked for it. This should be an excellent year for her career. Reaching a balance between material and spiritual goals will give her the best results. Her setbacks this year will be small temporary ones.

Summation

In summation, although 2006 looks like a good year professionally for Lindsay Lohan, I think she will have some of the same problems with exhaustion and professionalism that have dogged her the last few years. I think that next July, when she turns 21 in 2007, we will see the marked changes in her career that are part of becoming an adult leading Lady in Hollywood. She will experience changes that will involve both her singing and acting career, and her personal life as well.

What Are Podcasts And How Can They Help Your Business?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

A podcast is similar to a radio show that you can subscribe to or download at any time. In fact, it may help to think of it as a sort of TIVO for audio programs. A podcast is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to subscribe to, or download. Search online and you'll find a range of Podcasts available on nearly every topic imaginable. They range from entertainment focused to educational to business oriented and everywhere in between.

A podcast differs from a simple download in that new content may be automatically delivered. Users need not click into your website for important specials since all of this information may be automatically downloaded. A podcast show consists of a series of individual episodes that you can listen to and view on-line or offline whenever and wherever you want.

While podcasting has been around for about five years now remarkably, the term itself, has only been around since 2004. It's a contraction of IPod (The most popular MP3 player) and broadcasting. However, you don't even have to have an MP3 player to listen to programs. You can 'subscribe' to an entire podcast series using software on your PC or listen to a single episode at a time by using a web browser. Subscribing to a podcast ensures that all new shows are automatically downloaded to your computer as they are published, and even better subscribing is generally free. If you do happen to have an MP3 player, the next time you sync your device, your podcasts will be downloaded for listening on the go. If you don't want to subscribe, but rather just want a copy of a particular episode, you can just click the "Download" button to save to your hard disk. Once downloaded you can then manage it and play it like you would any other audio file. What distinguishes podcasts from other audio or video media is that the content is accessible to its audience(s) whenever, wherever, and however they want.

What are the business applications of Podcasting? The podcast is a real advantage for business travelers and salespeople who are constantly on the go. Since they are frequently in transit they can learn about what a company is offering while they travel. They're able to stay in the loop about changes that are occurring in the industry or a particular company while on the way to their next meeting. Whenever a business wants to change its marketing emphasis, their podcast will change with them. Podcasts enable potential customers to find out more about a particular company and its range of products and service without feeling pressured by a salesperson. Rather, a friendly voice explaining what makes the company unique will better serve to convert a potential client into a customer. Podcasts also save on manpower. An extensive sales force is typically required to detail a company's newest offers and innovations. With a podcast, visitors click in and are directed to any new information the company wants to present. The other really great thing about podcasts is that they have an incredibly wide reach. Clients from across the world can access information on companies or products and learn about them in a simple, direct manner at any time, and without having to be tied to a computer.

Especially important is the utilization of pod cast directories which list podcast shows along with the links to their original websites. These directories publicize the available podcasts. Among the more popular of the podcast directories are Yahoo Podcasts, Odeo, Podcast Alley and Podcasting News. When using directories it's important to select genre and content categories that make it easier for listeners to find your podcast. Once you are listed with a directory, you will begin to get visitors from these directories to your website. In order to encourage visitors to listen your podcast you'll need to start by creating an enticing title that tells them just enough about your product to intrigue them. More important than having a great title though is having even better content.

An outline for your podcast will enable you to be sure you don't lose your audience, and cover all the points you want to hit. How long your podcast will be is directly related to how much news you have to share and the extent to which you can keep that news fresh and exciting. Frequency of updates is also an important issue to address. This will likely depend on the nature of what you're discussing and how quickly things change in that industry.

So to sum up: Podcasts are basically like online radio shows that can be downloaded, or subscribed to. When used effectively they can be a powerful marketing tool for any sort of business. Buy a Home in Dayton's Bluff For $1.00!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Dayton's Bluff is a scenic historical neighborhood on the East Side of Saint Paul. The gorgeous area along the river bluff boasts sweeping views of the Mississippi River Valley and downtown. The opposite end of the neighborhood is bordered by both Mounds Park and Swede Hollow, offering acres of green space. Although it is accessible to downtown, Dayton's Bluff is separated by ravines, rail lines, freeways and bluffs. This separation has helped to establish Dayton's Bluff as its own entity.

For a community with so much to offer, Dayton's Bluff has never quite fulfilled its potential. Throughout the years there have been economic problems and cultural issues all leading to a lack of investment in the neighborhood.

Some feel that Dayton's Bluff is a hidden jewel that should be restored to its former beauty. The Dayton's Bluff Urban Partnership is a collection of different groups with similar goals of resurrecting the neighborhood, and restoring the historical homes that line the streets.

Some of their main objectives are:

- To create a safe and welcoming environment.

- Provide ample public and greens spaces for the community. The current parks are mainly located in the interior and used for organized sports. The bordering Mound Park and Swede Hollow are difficult to access because of their terrain.

- Tempering of excessive traffic and introduce more means of mass transit, pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes.

- Create jobs and training for the residents.

- Offer a broader range of housing to suit varying income levels.

- Promote high quality schools.

- Support local businesses.

- Improve the neighborhood character and encourage restoration of the historic structures.

In an effort to achieve some of these goals, the Dayton's Bluff Urban Partnership, Community Council and other partners have developed the Saint Paul's 4th Street Preservation Project in Dayton's Bluff. In an aggressive move to promote restoration and encourage home ownership, the City's Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) is selling off 11 single-family homes and duplexes between $1.00 and $50,000.

It's not as easy as it sounds, and definitely comes with certain conditions:

1. Applicants must prove they have the financial backing to complete the necessary renovations required to rehabilitate the property, and must be able to qualify for a mortgage ranging from $140,000 to $190,000.

2. Applicants must restore the properties by adhering to proper development and historic preservation specifications.

3. Applicants will either become eventual homeowners or will work with buyers to purchase and occupy the homes upon completion.

4. Buyers will receive technical assistance from the HRA to complete the renovation.

Visit the project website at www.stpaul.gov/4thstpp to obtain applications and rehabilitation guidelines.

Per HRA rules: "Proposals will be evaluated based on financial feasibility; compatibility with the East 4th Street Preservation Project Development Principles, Conformity with Dayton's Bluff Historic District Guidelines, Energy Efficiency Improvements, and overall property improvement."

If you are a developer looking to purchase the property for resale, your proposal will be evaluated based on:

1. Experience and adherence to federal, state and local laws.

2. Capacity of staff and consultants.

3. Working capital.

4. Construction capacity.

5. Marketing capacity.

Transportation of Luxury Cars

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Transportation is indispensable in day to day life. As usage of technology increases in the transportation process it determines the growth of a country. Generally people transfer from one place to another either for businesses or some other purposes and they prefer taking their own vehicles as it turns out to be a very costly affair disposing old vehicles and buying new ones. Certain classes of people always use their age old vehicles due to sentimental attachments and are reluctant to dispose them while shifting.

Certain companies involved in transportation business are specialized in transporting cars, moreover luxury cars. Generally the term luxury is a step above necessity and they generally serve as a person's status and prestige symbol. So a person who wants to transport his luxury car would not with stand a minute scratch on it as it directly deals with his status sentiments. Moreover the treatment of scratch would cost him a high rate. Hence the customer checks the past history of the company, services provided by them, the reputation of the company he will not hand over the car. The customer and the client should follow certain points which would help then serve each other better.

The first of all is the completion of paper work. If the customer has too much attachment to his car he should take everything in writing as to the compensation procedure, the date of departure and the date of arrival etc, this is done basically to avoid misunderstandings and problems in the future. Customer should also make a note to see that he has emptied his car that is he should remove all articles which has the intensity to damage the interiors of the car. Because companies provide compensation for the exterior damages not the interiors.

It is the duty of both the customer and the transporting company to examine the working efficiency of the car and also the damages on the car before it is sent for transportation. It is better to have it either written or taking a photograph would serve better. So that the company can escape from wrong claims because they can harm monetary as well as reputation related aspects.

Customer also has the right to examine the vehicle on which his car is to be loaded and transported. If he finds certain articles such as extra tire or tool kit or any such article which on the movement during transit can harm the car, customer has the whole authority to get it removed from the truck. Customer can also converse with the truck driver in order to ensure that his vehicle is in safe hands.

The last and the most important is the packaging of the cars. The customer can either pack the car himself or give the order to the transportation company itself or appoint a packaging agent. The efficient packing is necessary as it would avoid wear and tear and also has the capacity to avoid damages to the car.

5 Important Rules in Website Design

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The design of your website should be carried out with extreme caution. Every single detail should be properly attended to. This will ensure that your website serves the purpose it is intended for. Seven rules for creating an efficient website are provided below.

1) Avoid using splash pages
The introductory page of a website is referred to as a splash page. Most of them are designed in a very catchy manner. Some of them include a lot of graphics and animations. Users often find this very uncomfortable and time consuming. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you include only relevant information in the welcome page.

2) Avoid using excessive banner advertisements

People never appreciate it when they come across unwelcome banners on certain websites. They realize that it is part of some advertising campaign and might even result in them being suspicious about your site. So, the best way to go is to include only required links and content in your site. Customers should never feel that they are being forced to buy your products.

3) Enable simple navigation

A good website should be designed in such a way so as to allow even a small child to use it. A person gives 5 seconds to evaluate your site and if they find it too complicated, they would simply press the back button.

4) Provide means for customers to know their position

It so often happens that a user finds himself lost in a website while surfing. So, always provide proper navigation options to ensure that the customer can quickly return to the main menu and sub-menus. This will improve the overall efficiency of your site.

5) Do not include audio on your site

Most people find it a nuisance when an audio is looping on and on in your website. This won't let them read the content of your site properly. And if they don't find an option to turn it on, they would definitely exit your site. Therefore, if you feel that audio plays a vital role on your site, also include options so that the user can control the volume or mute the music.

Memphis Matters - "What Are You Going to Do About It?"

Image : http://www.flickr.com

At my daughter's swim practice one evening I found myself in discussion with a couple of other concerned dads. Memphis, with all it's history, music, food, Tiger basketball and Elvis, we can't seem to get out of the top 5 list. We are still in the top 5 most dangerous cities in America. Even though the city pulled the plug on A&E's show The First 48, reruns will be aired for a long time. Turn on your television and no matter which of the local news stations you watch, no news is good news. Murder, carjacking, the failing city schools, crooked politicians and some other depressing bit is all they seem to talk about these days.

As we debated poolside, we determined that the need for positive press for our city is more than needed, but could in fact be the answer. All three of us Memphians, concerned dads and contributors to our local economy agreed. This is our town, our home and we want so desperately for things to get better, but how?

In Malcolm Gladwell's book, The Tipping Point he writes how epidemics spread both good and bad. In the 1980s Gladwell explains how crime in New York had reached an all time high with well over 2,000 murders and 600,000 serious felonies a year. Underground, on the subways, conditions could only be described as perilous.

Gladwell writes, "This was New York City in the 1980s, a city in the grip of one of the worst crime epidemics in its history. But then, suddenly and without warning, the epidemic tipped. From a high in 1990, the crime rate went into precipitous decline. Murders dropped by two-thirds. Felonies were cut in half. Other cities saw their crime drop in the same period. But in no place did the level of violence fall farther or faster than NYC. On the subway, by the end of the decade, there were 75% fewer felonies than there had been at the decade's start." - The Tipping Point.

How did New York go from having the highest crime rates in the country to one of the safest big cities in America? One theory mentioned in The Tipping Point was the 'Broken Window Theory'. Criminologists James Q. Wilson and George Kelling developed this theory and based their argument on this premise - that crime is the inevitable result of disorder. If a window is broken and left unrepaired, onlookers will conclude that no one cares and no one is in charge. Soon, more windows are broken, and the sense of anarchy will spread from the building to the street on which it faces, sending a signal that anything goes. In a city, relatively minor problems like graffiti, public disorder, and aggressive panhandling are equivalent to the 'Broken Window' theory.

George Kelling was hired by New York City's transit authority as a consultant in the 1980s. He took his 'Broken Window' theory to the subways and the transit authority later hired a guy named David Gunn, who took Kelling's theory and cleaned up the subway system. The graffiti clean up took 6 years to complete in NYC, from 1984 to 1990. Once the subways were clean they later hired the transit police who would nab fare-beaters and handcuff them to a chain gain until that had a "full catch." The idea was to signal, as publicly as possible, that the transit police were cracking down.

After Rudy Giuliani's election as mayor in 1994, he ordered the police department to take the same strategy that had been used in the subway and take it to the streets. It worked. As they cleaned graffiti from the subways, the next day a car would be vandalized again. But without fail the transit authority would clean up car by car immediately until the gangs and thugs finally gave up. New York City is now one of the safest big cities in America. People like George Kelling, David Gunn, and Rudy Giuliani won the war on crime in the Big Apple...they took their subways and streets back.

As I look at Memphis, I can't be one who complains, but one who commits. As my friend Vick said poolside, "Every time I hear someone complaining about Memphis, I just ask them. What are you going to do about it?" Those words hit home to me. I have been guilty of complaining about our politicians, complaining about overcrowded prisons or just complaining to complain. Vick is right. We (Memphians) all need to take a look in the mirror and ask ourselves, "What are you going to do about it?" Complaining only solidifies the problem. Individual commitment to make Memphis a better place can tip the epidemic the other direction.

As you read this, you may be asking yourself: "I am not a police officer, mayor or a transit authority employee. How can I make a difference?" My answer would be to start with positive press in your home, workplace, network and community. Don't fall victim to negative Memphis-bashing pander around the water cooler. Instead look for ways to get involved....look for a 'Broken Window' and fix it.

I attend a church that meets at Crichton College off Highland Avenue. What drew me and my family to this church was not just the music or casual dress code, but their authenticity and dedication to Memphis. Fellowship Memphis is a church committed to Memphis, urban development, racial reconciliation and healing in our community. They don't play church on Sundays...they walk the walk. They saw a broken window in Kingsbury High School. They saw a school where only 55% of the 2006-2007 seniors passed their math exit exam and could not graduate. They saw 45% of students who were left behind. Fellowship's membership volunteered as tutors at Kingsbury and in 2008, 95% of the seniors passed their math exit exam and graduated.

Wow...what a story! Did you hear this on any of the local news stations? Of course not. As I stated before, good news is no news. Therefore if you truly want a change in Memphis, it is going to take more people like those found at Fellowship Memphis. Little things can make a big difference...those little things can spread...start an epidemic, but it starts with you. "What are you going to do about it?"

Budget 2010 Will Be Progressive Yet Defensive, Feels Ganesha

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Budget 2010 is just around the corner and everyone is hoping to get some relief from inflation, in general, during the Union Budget for 2010 to be presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the Lok Sabha on 26th February. The common man has a lot to expect from the government in terms of sops and tax cuts. The industry experts are divided over whether our Finance Minister will fulfill the wishes of citizens or not.

Ganesha predicts Budget 2010 with the help of Vedic Astrology.

Ganesha anticipates that this year's Budget will boost the floundering economy by focusing on fixing infrastructure, generating rural employment and providing incentives to sick sectors.

Horoscope of Independent India shows that Sun is in and transiting Sun is passing through 10th House of Aquarius and is in conjunct with Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury. Here the 10th House also represents the government's natal House.

Also, as Sun is in the Satatarka constellation in 3rd pad and Satatarka represents Rahu on the day of Budget, Government of India is likely to take a strong stance on petroleum and gas products, silver, lead and steel. This budget is likely to have some bad news for home-makers as price of LPG shoots further up. The hike is a certainty as constellations are not supporting the product. Moreover, the Finance Minister may have to take some harsh decisions on pesticides. Power sector may experience the heavy shocks in the budget; products where atomic and other high maintenance source of energy are utilised may become more expensive. Electronic items like refrigerator and TV are likely to become a little more expensive too. Foreign liquor and beverages may also get dearer.

India's Natal Moon is posited in Cancer. Moreover, on the Budget day, transiting Moon will be in conjunction with Natal moon in Cancer sign. This conjunction will take place in Pushya constellation in the 2nd pad. Cotton, wheat, turmeric, cable, machinery, chemicals, colors, fat will receive some valuable favour from the FM.

Natal Mars is posited in the 2nd House of Gemini and transiting Mars is passing through Cancer sign in the 2nd pad of Pushya constellation. Mars is conjunct with natal Moon, Mercury, Saturn, Venus and Sun. This suggests major reforms in the Railway Budget. The changes in prices of products like ghee, honey, computers, radios and jewellery.

Transiting Mercury and Venus will be in conjunction in the 10th House. Finance Minister may present the Budget keeping the Congress's political agenda in mind. In this situation, Finance Minister may lionize Import-Export, Foreign Trade, National Growth and Rural Advancement. The Supreme Court may be bestowed with more powers. Some relief in Insurance sector is expected. Education will be affordable, but higher education will be pricey.

Jupiter will be transiting through the 10th House in Aquarius sign and 3rd pad of Satatarka constellation. As Jupiter is Lord of 8th and 11th Houses, Medical Policy, Health Department, Govt Loans, Bonds, Govt Securities may not receive expected benefits. Sandalwood, Gold, Diamond Jewellery and Perfumes may become costly.

Venus, Lord of the Ascendant and the 6th House of the natal chart of Independent India, will be transiting from 10th House. Therefore, Textile, Butter Milk, Betel Nuts, Liquid Medicine, Land Developers, Liquor will be in focus. During the budget, the Centre may announce new health-related programme, and upgrading of Army, Air-Force, Civil Services, Medical Services and internal security.

Saturn will transit through Virgo in Utarafalguni constellation. This will inspire our Prime Minister and Finance Minister to take some bold steps to curb inflation and improve GDP. However, despite some progressive steps, they may not get due credit. Saturn will trigger several changes in Grains, Edible Oils, Vegetables, Plastic, Mining Industry and Drug Manufacturing.

The 5th House represents stock market. After budget, there is likely to be a mood of caution at the bourses.

Moreover, Transiting Sun will be in 10th House of Independent India's chart. Finance Minister is likely to address Tax Accumulation, Revenue Deficit, Fixed Deposit, Foreign Direct Investment Flow, GDP rate. But all this will not give any respite to the people. The central government's policy to play safe may not work this time.

India has Natal Mahadasha of Sun - Antardasha is Moon - Pratiantardasha Jupiter. Moreover, India is under the influence of Sun's Mahadasha. Sun is Sukkesh, therefore Tax Collection, Corporate Tax and Agriculture sector may see a tax improvement.

Let's have a sector-wise look at the budget:

Information Technology (IT)

As Transiting Sun is conjunct with Venus, Jupiter and Mercury, the government may have to give importance to the IT sector. The Sun is in Satatarka constellation, which is represented by Rahu, and will be influencing IT sector. Thus, if IT is ignored this time, the sector may suffer a setback. Therefore, IT should have a special mention in the budget. Research and development in the Information Sector may get further boost.

Very Active, high volatility and fluctuation from 14/04/2010 to 27/05/2010

Automobile

Automobile sector is seeing a strong position of Venus and Mercury. So, this time automobile industry may receive some direct benefits. Ganesha also sees some progressive steps from the Finance Minister. Auto sector will rejoice the budget announcements and the industry has a bright future in India.

Very active, high fluctuation from 22/06/2010 to 13/07/2010

Pharmaceutical

Sun represent the Pharma Sector. Transiting Sun is going to enter 10th House of Independent India's chart. India has Natal Mahadasha of Sun and Finance Minister will take decisive steps to encourage Pharma Industry, especially in their offshore undertakings, feels Ganesha. But the overall impact of the budget on this sector will be fairly neutral.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation from 04/03/2010 to 30/03/2010

Retail

The Finance Minister's briefcase is likely to hold a substantial promise for this sector. Policies determining the quality of material, gradation and consumer protection are likely to be formulated or consolidated.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation from 30/09/2010 to 01/11/2010

Banking

Mercury is the planet that rules the banking sector. Transiting Mercury passing through the 10th House has become very strong. Moreover, decisive steps are expected to bring together all government and semi-government banks. The idea of Mega Banking Corporation is likely to get a boost. They can borrow funds at lower rates from international Banks and depositories. However, Mercury posited in the Dhanistha constellation is unrewarding and suggests a possibility of confusion in this sector. Also, Gemini sign is affected by Ketu and Virgo sign is affected by Saturn, so lower trading income and week credit growth will hurt the banking sector.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation from 14/06/2010 TO 24/06/2010

Infrastructure

Mars is transiting over natal Moon, Sun, Saturn, Mercury and Venus in the 3rd House. Mars is the lord of 12th House. Mars is transiting through 2nd pad of Pushya constellation and is retrograde. Thus, National Highways, Railways and Airport Authority of India can get a better security system. But, overall they may not be too happy with the budget. Privatisation and modernisation for Metros and Tier - II cities will stay on course. With transiting Ketu afflicting Natal Mars, expect some decisive steps taken by the FM on the country's leading ports.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation from 26/05/2010 TO 21/06/2010

Metal and Steel

Saturn, the Lord of destiny and industries, will be transiting through the 5th House in India's birth chart. The 5th House represents stock market, investment, production capacity of India. Saturn is passing through 4th pad of Utarafalguni constellation. From astrological point of view, the slow moving Saturn will put pressure on base metal prices.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation from 02/05/2010 to 19/05/2010

Entertainment

Venus represents the Entertainment sector. The conjunction of Venus with Jupiter, Sun, Mercury and Venus pass through the 2nd pad of Purvabhadra. Growth of Radio Stations is likely to continue. Broadcasting Companies may express some concern. But overall, expect announcement of simpler and favourable Tax policies by the FM.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation from 09/09/2010 to 08/11/2010

Telecom

Mercury represents the Telecom sector. Mercury, the Lord of the 2nd and 5th House, is posited in the 3rd House of India's birth chart.
The 3rd House represents telecommunication. So in India telecommunication is always going to be a profiting sector. Transiting mercury passes through 10th House of the 3rd pad of Dhanistha constellation. This indicates a lot of unexpected changes in this sector. However, Custom Duty is likely to remain untouched by the central government.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation from 25/06/2010 TO 07/10/2010

Fertilizer, Pesticide, Agriculture

Rahu is transiting in 8th House of India's natal horoscope. So suicidal rates are likely to increase this year. Although not by much, those dealing with seeds, agro-chemicals and drip-irrigation may get some relief. However, as Rahu dominates the entire horoscope of Independent India this year, pesticides may be the major point of debate in the Parliament.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation from 05/08/2010 TO 25/08/2010

Cement & Real Estate

Mars is transiting over natal Moon, Sun, Saturn, Mercury, and Venus in 3rd House. Mars is the Lord of 12th House. Mars is transiting through the 2nd pad of Pushya Constellation. Since natal Mars is afflicted by transiting Ketu, there can be a major change in overall expenditure. All in all, the growth story of India Inc will continue. The Finance Minster will play safe.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation from 26/05/2010 to 21/06/2010 and 01/11/2010 to 30/12/2010

Conclusion

Overall, the conjunction of Sun, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter in their transit through the 10th House on the day of the Budget indicates that the finance minister may try and reconsider tax accumulation, revenue deficit, fixed deposit, flow of FDIs, and GDP growth rate. Disinvestment of public sector units is also expected to be on the agenda. He will try to play safe and will make efforts to sustain the existing growth rate. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will present a progressive budget for the country but will fail to garner appreciation for the same. Ganesha advises investors to trade cautiously in 2010.

Very Active, high volatility and wide fluctuation. March 9,10, 11, 15, 22, 23,29

Welcome to Tanzania!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Tanzania is blessed with natural beauty and extraordinary wildlife. It is the largest country in East Africa, nearly a million square kilometers (386,109 square miles). Agriculture dominates the economy with the vast majority of its crop exports consisting of coffee, tea, cotton, cashews, sisal, cloves and pyrethrum. While somewhat unreliable cash flows frustrate farmers, government intervention is having a significant and positive impact on the country's economy.

In 1986, to help improve the country's economy, the Tanzanian government established new policies including reducing its budget deficit, easing trade policies and reducing food crop restrictions. In addition, as a result of significant U.S. funding and numerous international groups in the mining, agricultural, gas and oil, insurance and tourism industries increasing their staff and presence in the country, Tanzania enjoyed a 16% increase in Foreign Direct Investment in 2007.

Tanzania has been growing at approximately 4% a year and is now a fully integrated democratic society that is developing into one of Africa's most vibrant economies. Dodoma is the capital city and is home to the country's parliament and government offices. It is situated 440 kilometers (273 miles) due west of Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital. Dar es Salaam is a city that is over five centuries old. It is a mix of African, Arabian, Asian and European cultures. Tanzanians are extremely friendly and will stop to assist foreigners in any way they can.

For someone first arriving in Dar es Salaam by air, they will see a large area with high palm trees and mud dwellings as far as the eye can see. Once on the ground, the buildings are haphazardly constructed and not very clean. By contrast the international hotels are of good quality and well situated to take advantage of the seascapes.

The city is divided into 4 distinct areas: The "town center" is a mixture of office buildings, hotels, restaurants, bars, night clubs, parks and sports facilities. The "peninsular" is where most of the diplomats and expatriates live. It boasts spectacular views of the sea, hosts local restaurants, shops, hotels and has a sailing club. Then, there are the coastal homes and resorts which span 20 to 30 kilometers (12 to 19 miles) north and south of Dar es Salaam. The remainder of the city, unfortunately, is characterized by low-cost housing, with a large population of three to four million people living close to the poverty line.

Dar es Salaam has changed dramatically from socialism to a more capitalist-aligned government over the last 15 years. The influx of diplomats, big business and foreign aid donations have resulted in a gradual improvement in the living standards of the local population. The infrastructure and public facilities are also improving each year--frequent power failures of the past are becoming much less frequent. Water and sewage problems remain high on the government's list of priorities.

Swahili is the official language of Tanzania, but for business communications, English is almost always used. A person can function quite easily in the city without knowing Swahili, but learning it does make it easier to assimilate, shop and barter in the local communities.

Being polite and greeting Tanzanians is the most important thing you can remember and preferably if it is done in Swahili. Visitors should try not to raise their voices, even if patience is tested. Dar es Salaam is a Muslim environment and one should be very understanding of the Muslim customs.

Dar es Salaam is extremely hot most of the year around and unless you have an office or house equipped with fans or a good air-conditioning system, you will feel drained by the high temperatures which are generally 30 degrees C (86 degrees F), and in summer, closer to 40 degrees C (104 degrees F) with humidity very close to 100%. Torrential showers come and go without much notice. One can escape from the heat on weekends by going to one of the many beaches.

Foreigners seeking to enter Tanzania should have a valid passport. The passport is to be presented to an Immigration Officer at any entry point, border station, airport or harbor. It must be presented with a Visa, a Residence Permit or a Pass, which is for those in transit en route to another destination.

There are five types of visas: The "Ordinary Visa" is issued at any Tanzanian mission abroad. However, if you arrive at the check point without a visa, you can obtain one at the entry point at a cost of US $50. The "Business Visa," which is called a CTA, is issued to potential investors or business people trying to establish professional contacts. It is valid for two months. It costs US $100, in addition to the entry visa cost. If the business person leaves the country, they need to get the entry visa and CTA visa again when entering. The "Multiple-Entry Visas" are issued to foreigners who, due to business commitments, are required to make multiple entries. The validity can be from one month to one year. The "Referred Visa" requires special clearance from the Director of Immigration or Principal Immigration officer in Zanzibar. This is usually for people from Lebanon, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Somalia, refugees, stateless people and any other country as specified by the authorities. Applications are made to any Tanzanian missions abroad and cannot be obtained at entry points. Finally, the "Transit Visa" is issued for those who wish to cross Tanzania and the validity is two weeks. It is for those people holding onward tickets.

Visas can be obtained at the airport and if arriving by land or sea, at the port of entry. Although the government has officially stopped asking for yellow fever certificates, it is still advisable to obtain and carry a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Weapons, pornographic material, fresh food and cars more than 10 years old should not be brought into Tanzania.

There are two types of work permits, each requiring different documents including resumes, cover letters, academic qualifications and personal photographs. A special type of Work Permit is given specifically to those who successfully apply and possess rare qualifications or skills. These are usually granted to those in highly technical occupations that are not readily available in the local labor market including doctors, pilots, lawyers and accountants.

With a residence permit, spouses and dependents are permitted to stay in Tanzania for the duration of the working relative's stay. They generally do not work, but there are some exceptions based on specific criteria. A passport is the main document used to verify identity in Tanzania. Apart from getting a Tanzanian driver's license, no other documentation is required.

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (Shilingi). The notes are TSH 10,000 (red, elephant), TSH 5,000 (purple, rhino), TSH 1,000 (blue, late President Nyerere), TSH 500 (green, buffalo) and TSH 2,00 (brown, Zanzibar Fort). The coins are TSH 200, 100, 50 and 25. TSH 20, 10 and 5 are out of circulation and while they still may be used in banks, are no longer issued or used. Bureau of Exchanges are located throughout the city. The rates vary so it wise to shop around. Hotels will also exchange foreign currency, but at higher rates.

Cash is the most commonly-used payment for everyday purchases e.g., groceries, etc. It is essential for such things as cooking gas, fuel for the car, restaurants, drinks at bars, taxis and most other daily purchases. Recently, larger shops have started accepting Visa and MasterCard and some places will accept American Express, but it is still advisable to have cash available in case of problems with the unreliable machines.

Credit cards are accepted in hotels and some very select restaurants, which will charge a 5% fee. In most instances, you will need Tanzanian shillings. Foreign cash is accepted, but at shocking exchange rates. Some institutions insist on being paid in U.S. dollars, but you have the right to pay in Shillings. However, you will more than likely get a poor exchange rate.

As a foreigner you are able to open a private bank account with a minimum of 50,000 Tanzanian Shillings, 1,000 U.S.-dollars and sometimes with 1,000 Euros, but you will need a work/residence permit, two passport-size photographs, a letter of appointment from your employer and a cash deposit in order to do so. All banks use English and Swahili as the language of correspondence. Provided you have sufficient funds, you can transfer and remit any amount of currency out of the country. Conversely, you can transfer in as much as you want, but it will be converted into the currency of your accounts.

Banking hours on weekdays are normally 08:30 am to 15:30 pm and Saturdays, from 09:00 am to noon. There are over 30 banks with Barclay's, Standard Chartered, Stanbic, Bank of Baroda, FBME, and Citibank being the more well known internationally. Most banks have ATMs and offer Visa, and MasterCard facilities. Cash is dispensed in Tanzanian Shillings. TSH 400,000 is usually the maximum allowed to be withdrawn at one time. Traveler's cheques are generally only accepted and exchanged at banks, hotels and bureaus of exchange. Credit cards are slowly being introduced but, when dealing with locals, cash is the only acceptable tender.

When searching for a place to live in your city, the most important factor to consider is your budget. Accommodation costs are extremely high while the standards are comparatively low. The other factor to consider is the traveling distance to work and school as traffic congestion is problematic, especially in the morning.

Oysterbay and the Peninsula are the two most popular neighborhoods for expats. Rentals in the Oysterbay and Peninsular vary from US $2,500 to $15,000 per month. The most prominent and sought after areas are Masaki (near the Yacht Club), Msasani Peninsular and Oysterbay. All are located near the most popular school, shopping centers, hospitals, hotels and restaurants. These areas have been developing at an amazing rate in the last five to seven years and you now have a choice of all types of accommodation. Many of them have swimming pools, gyms, tennis courts and security systems. Because these areas are in high demand, the rents are much higher and payment terms are seldom less than a year.

Foreigners are not allowed to buy property. Only businesses are permitted to buy on a 99-year lease agreement. So as a general rule, accommodation is rented. Landlords of property on the Peninsular demand an advance payment for one year. In other areas, some owners ask for only six months in advance.

While looking for your home, you may consider furnished accommodation on a short-term lease. Ask for a list of accommodations available, but book early because it is scarce in Dar es Salaam. There are only two international residential management companies: Knight Frank and Pam Goulding. However there are three to four good local firms. There are over 40 hotels and furnished apartments in Dar es Salaam and the surrounding areas: Holiday Inn, Movenpick, Kempinski, Protea and Sun International are the more commonly known hotel chains.

Utilities are generally not included in the price of rent. Water is a factor to be considered when moving to an area. In certain areas, for example the Yacht Club and Masaki, a house for a family of four requires water to be trucked in four times a month at US $50 a delivery. If DAWASCO, the local company distributing water around Dar es Salaam is connected to your home it can cost about TSH 100,000 (US $85 per month).

Electricity is another high-cost factor. A house that consumes electricity for air-conditioners and appliances can be as much as TSH 500,000 (US $430 per month). TANESCO sells prepaid electricity through its LUKU offices from Monday to Saturday. Some garages offer a 24 hour service for sales of LUKU. Gas is a very useful alternative to electricity and is readily available and most DUKAs (local shops) sell it late at night. The voltage system is 220 but because of the fluctuating .voltage, most households buy many protection plugs to prevent their appliances from being destroyed by the sharp peaks and troughs in supply. Most appliances function in Tanzania.

Tanzania is considered safe, but there has been an increase in petty theft and some gang-related attacks on lone people. Burglary in the home is rare, but one should employ 24-hour security services.

Expats to Dar es Salaam usually enroll children in the main private schools. There are more than a dozen schools to choose from in Dar es Salaam including IST (International School of Tanganyika) in Oysterbay for upper class children and IST Elementary school in Upanga. IST is by far the most popular school of choice for expatriates and for that reason alone, it is difficult to get students placed immediately. Sometimes your luck is determined by those leaving a particular grade. The school is extremely expensive but has the best record in the city. There are also seven selected schools in the Peninsular, Ada Estate and Upanga areas which cater to preschool children. School buses are available, but heavy traffic means that children spend a long time on the bus from very early in the morning. Hence a lot of families drive their children to and from school.

All schools except IST start in January and finish in December. IST starts in September and finishes at the end of June. The schools as a rule, insist that their pupils wear uniforms. Sports are not a high priority, but IST does have some activities other than academic.

It is recommended that you get Yellow Fever and Cholera vaccinations as a precaution, and speak to your doctor about medicine to prevent malaria. You would not be refused medical care, but in Aga Khan and government hospitals, admittance is relatively cheap. Most expatriates go to IST Clinic--International School of Tanganyika Clinic, which is run by professional doctors who charge in U.S. dollars for all services. The local institutions will refer patients to Kenya, South Africa if the situation warrants it.

You can dial 112 for help due to a medical emergency, a fire or if you need to contact the police, however, these numbers are rarely answered. It is best to get the emergency numbers of the security company you belong to. There are three or four security firms that offer reliable ambulance and medical assistance services. Daktari" is the word for "doctor" in Swahili. "Duka la Dawa" is the shop for medicine. The water is not safe to drink from the tap. Bottled water is highly recommended.

Dar es Salaam traffic can be very congested especially in the morning and evening hours. It is a definite advantage to have your own vehicle. If a company vehicle is not available to ferry your family around, you may require a second vehicle. A great deal of expatriates use drivers to avoid the stresses of traffic and the perils of possible accidents. You may want to employ a driver to carry out both functions and, in general, these people are very reliable and prepared to work odd hours. Vehicles are generally a four-wheel drive type, because the roads are not in good condition. A new vehicle of that type sells for US $30,000 to $50,000 but good second hand vehicles are available for between US $8,000 and $15,000.

A Tanzanian driver's license is required within six months upon arrival. The licensing authority requires both a current driver's license for verification; three passport size photographs and an eye test by a reputable specialist (at a cost of TSH 30,000 or US $26). Insurance is not mandatory, but it is highly recommend that you take out full comprehensive insurance as very few local citizens have insurance and you need to protect your assets.

In Tanzania you drive on the left-hand side. Despite periodic complaints in the press about dangerous driving, dirty uniforms and unsociably loud music, Dar es Salaam's public transport is surprisingly efficient and you can get almost anywhere within a twenty kilometer (12 mile) radius of the city for less than a thousand Shillings (less than a US $1). "Daladals" are shared minibuses which are all around the town and operate from 5am to 10pm. For short, frequently-used distances, the route is serviced by an inexpensive, three-wheeler motorbike, which accommodates two- to three passengers. Taxis can be found everywhere. Trips to the airport are between TSH 20,000 to 30,000 (US $17 to $26). In the city, the transport is safe but is generally very crowded and can be very hot and congested.
Long haul buses are available to take Expats out of the city. They are of good quality and are fairly inexpensive, but the drivers are known to speed. If the distance is within 40-50 kilometers (24-30 miles), then taxis would be a good option. Because of the huge distances from Dar es Salaam to other major tourist spots, many travelers use local airlines and charter companies to go to these places.

There are many grocery stores to buy food and toiletries including Shoppers Plaza, Shop rite (three outlets), Game, Village Supermarket and Shrijee's (three outlets). For fresh produce, there are other "Dukas," but one must be ready to barter for the best price, so most expatriates tend to shop at the main-stream shops and occasionally buy at the odd roadside Duka. Other than fresh food, all other commodities are imported and comes with an inflated cost. You can get most things, including appliances locally and quite a variety too.

There are also several brilliant furniture outlets. Tanzanians are very good furniture manufacturers and are renowned for Zanzibar beds, chests, bookshelves, side tables and coffee tables and much more. Zanzibar Doors are grand entrances for a great deal of houses.

The expat community is very friendly and there are many activities available for entertainment. Clubs and groups are available to meet and mix with other expatriates and locals alike including Bridge Clubs, British Council, Dar es Salaam Yacht Club, Diplomatic Spouses Group, Irish Society, Little Theatre, Mah-jong, the Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania and many others. There are not many radio stations and apart from television, the social life is restricted to going to the movies and dining out. There are several groups who welcome "Karibu," newcomers. There are night clubs and many bars, but it is suggested that a newcomer only goes to these places once they get to know the city. There are a lot of single, professional expats who are on assignment for a contracted period.

The list of things for spouses to do is almost endless. It is common for spouses to visit the islands near Dar es Salaam, enjoy the sunshine and eat freshly cooked fish and chips. The sporting activities are limited, but golf, tennis and cricket are all very popular social events. There is a bowling alley at the Sea Cliff Hotel on the Peninsular and scuba diving and sailing are popular activities on the weekends.

Nannies are available and are generally have experience working with other expats families. They are very reliable and can double up as housekeepers. Domestic employment contracts are essential, the wages are very affordable.

While Kunduchi Hotel and Beach Resorts are the most popular kid-friendly attractions in the area, other childhood activities are quite limited and families are expected to entertain their children most of the time. Other than school-organized activities, it is suggested that families remain involved with selecting the possible venues for their teenagers before allowing them to explore on their own. Discuss any safety issues for children in this city. There are no real fears for children, but it is recommended that teenagers do not go into the city on their own.
