Transportation Solutions For Newark Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is located in New Jersey, about 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan in New York City. EWR forms part of the larger Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which includes JFK International and La Guardia International Airport. In 2008, Newark Airport served over 35.4 million passengers, contributing to the total 107 million passengers passing through the New York-area airports system, the largest in the world behind London. Being in a major metropolitan area means that getting to, from and around Newark Airport can be a bit difficult. Here are some of the transportation options available that should make it a little easier next time you fly through EWR.

The Air Train

The airport's Air Train service can take passengers from EWR to the New Jersey Transit and Amtrak train stations, which can in turn take you directly to Manhattan. This can be quicker than taking a cab even, and much, much cheaper. It costs about $11.55 one way to get from the airport to Penn Station. To get from the city to the terminals, board the train at the Newark Airport Station of the NJ Transit System. You can see train schedules at the official NJ Transit System's website. Trains usually run from 5a.m. to 2a.m.

Car Services

If convenience is your main objective, you can arrange for a car service to meet you at the airport (if you're arriving), either before you board or upon arrival. This option lets you avoid waiting in the taxi lines, and it's especially good if you have a group of four or more people, in which case sharing a van or limo becomes more affordable.

Taxis From EWR

Metered fare from the airport to any Manhattan location comes out to approximately $50 to $75, after toll costs. Taxis are parked outside every terminal, where there's usually a taxi stand where you often have to wait in line. There's additional charges for luggage larger than 24 inches if you let the drive handle the bags. Rates are per car and cars can carry up to four passengers.

Taxis To EWR

Metered fare from the metropolitan areas of New Jersey and New York to the airport is usually $69 to $75 plus return toll costs. NYC taxis heading to Newark Airport have a $15 surcharge.

If You're Driving on your own

If you're driving your own car to EWR and need long term parking, your best bet is to park at one of the off-site lots. They're cheaper than airport parking, with rates $11 per day, and offer free airport shuttles that get you from your car to the terminals in a matter of a few short minutes.
