After 9/11 homeland security business increased significantly to the point that now it's annual income is greater than many traditional enterprises like the music and movie-making businesses.

The United States Department of Homeland Security's mission is to protect against, prevent and respond to terrorism acts on the soil of the United States. Recently Congress increased their authority to allow Homeland Security to quickly and efficiently install extra physical barriers and roads at the borders of the United States. This extension of their activities has boosted the number of these types of Jobs to over 20,000 available jobs published on the internet and the number is increasing.

A different challenge which will necessitate greater numbers of homeland Jobs and investments is climate change. March 22, 2008, Joshua W. Busby of the University of Texas at Austin published an article in the Washington Post stating that the United States government should take action related to adaptation, risk reduction and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from worldwide climatic disruptions.

Generally one of the requirements for Homeland Security Jobs is a degree in criminal justice although there are many other ways to enter the field and work one's way to the top. After completion of their education agents are assigned to any one of many Jobs with the primary duty being to secure the United States' airports, borders, and other waterways. These jobs differ from jobs of other security guards because they also involves researching, analyzing, and developing technology related to security attacks and disasters as well as examining reports and using the information therein to prevent penetration of U.S. security systems.

These Security Jobs are found in many government services and bureaus including the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Capitol Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Transportation Security Administration and Park Services, the Federal Protective Service, and the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. It is important to remember that most of these Jobs demand that the candidate have quite a bit of experience after completing the required education.

The market for Security Jobs is booming and the trend is expected to continue for another five to ten years. According to the vice president of HS Research, Tomer Amit, most of this decade's growth will be the result of building what Homeland Security Research calls "a homeland defense infrastructure." If this thinking is correct the infrastructure described will undoubtedly result in a gigantic increase in the need for Homeland Security Jobs.
